Centre for Alternative Land Use

Facilities and Resources

CALU is based at Bangor University's Henfaes Research and Development Centre: north Wales' Centre of Excellence for research, development and knowledge transfer in horticulture, agriculture, forestry and all aspects of rural land use.

Henfaes is approximately five miles east of Bangor. The land at the Centre runs from the coast to the mountain and comprises a diverse range of habitat and production areas.

Henfaes provides a range of facilities from modern meeting rooms with full audio-visual facilities, to fully climate controlled glasshouses.

There are 49ha of lowland fields which can be used for crop trials. Crops trialled recently include: potatoes; various cereals; various forage crops; cane and bush fruits; oil seeds; energy crops.

CALU has a permanent display area at Henfaes where blueberries, aronia, sea buckthorn, raspberries (autumn & summer), strawberries, red currants, gooseberries, asparagus, perennial herbs, globe artichokes and rhubarb are grown. These are supplemented with a range of annual crops. We run events to demonstrate the potential for these crops in north Wales.

For information on facilities, services and rates, please contact CALU.
